There has been a phenomenal growth of the technical Institution during the past three decades. In the past five years there has been a mushrooming of engineering Colleges in our state. It is a fact that there are 7 Engineering Colleges within 7 Km of radius in our capital city – Thiruvananthapuram. However it has resulted in certain imbalance in the technical education in the country. It is seen that the Polytechnic education has lagged behind the degree level education. Thus the ratio of degree to Diploma admission capacity is more than 2 where as ideally it should be 0.25 to 0.33. As a result of this, there is an under utilization of qualified engineers. The high cost of diploma level education and relatively poor financial capacity of the aspiring students is not attracting private investment into diploma level education. The return on investment in the polytechnic colleges is very low compared to the Engineering colleges.
But we are fully aware of our responsibility and we boldly faced the challenge by starting the first Polytechnic College in Kerala in self finance sector.
